Dental hygiene treatment is delivered by a specially trained dental hygienist who will help to remove any hard-to-reach plaque from your teeth that may have built up over time.

Here is what you can expect from a hygiene appointment:
  1. Your teeth and gums will be assessed to determine the amount of plaque removal you will need and risk factors will be highlighted.
  2. Your teeth will be professionally cleaned with special equipment and pastes. This process is also known as scaling and polishing.
  3. The hygienist's role is to show you how to look after your teeth so that they remain free from plaque in the future. You will be advised on the best tooth brushing technique and given tips on flossing and using interdental brushes.

Dental hygiene at our practice also functions preventatively to treat gum disease and bad breath. If you have a bridge, denture, orthodontic treatment or a dental implant you will have specific hygiene needs that the dentist will be able to assist you with.

Aqua care air abrasion unit

AquaCare dental air abrasion and air polishing for cavity preparation, cleaning and stain removal.

AquaCare is a dental air abrasion unit, enabling you to provide contact-free and minimally invasive dentistry (MID), making routine dental procedures painless for patients.

With its use of various powder textures on the tooth surface, AquaCare can improve bond strengths, desensitising, remineralising and prophylaxis treatments. Fissures can be cleared, and cavities can be cut – in many cases without the need for the drill or needle.

AquaCare uses breakthrough technology to deliver a comfortable, quick clean procedure, by using a fine stream of the Aqua Sol fluid combined with a small volume of powder directed at the teeth to be treated. You are in total control of the powder, pressure and solution.

In cleaning mode, the AquaCare is a valuable tool for the hygienist, delivering highly efficient stain removal and cleaning, removing only the minimum of sound tooth material and eliminating the risk of chipping and stress fractures. The AquaCare can clean into the very fine structure of the tooth, which conventional cleaning systems cannot do.

It is recommended that you come in for regular hygiene appointments to ensure your mouth stays clean and healthy.

Oral Health Tips
Oral Health Tips
Prevent Gum Disease

Regular cleanings remove plaque and tartar build-up, which left unchecked, can lead to gum disease. You’ll leave with a fresh, clean mouth, and the peace of mind that your gums are in tip-top shape.

Keep Underlying Gums and Teeth Healthy

Cleaning below the gumline and in-between teeth, targeting hidden areas that are often missed during daily brushing.

Prevent Bad Breath

Plaque and calculus cause bacteria build-up, leading to halitosis. Regular deep can help keep bad breath at bay.

Oral hygiene made easy

Along with a good toothbrush and the right brushing technique, daily flossing is one of the essentials of perfect oral hygiene. Only flossing allows you to really reach all interdental areas - for healthy teeth and gums.

No matter whether you want to clean extremely wide interdental areas, implants, bridges or orthodontic appliances - Oral-B®, offers a wide selection of dental flosses and interdental brushes.

Please always note the following:

  1. How to hold dental floss:

Tear of approximately 45 cm of dental floss. Wrap ti two or three times around your right middle finger and a few times around your left middle finger until there are about 5- 10 cm of flos left between your hands.

  2. How to start in the upper jaw:

To clean the interdental areas in the upper jaw, stretch a short section of the dental floss (approx. 2cm) firmly over both thumbs.

  3. How to insert dental floss:

Carefully insert/draw in the dental floss to avoid injuring your gums. To get past areas of close contact (points where teeth touch), make light horizontal sawing motions.

  4. How to floss:

Wrap the dental floss around a tooth in a U-shape and move the thread up and down approximately six times, applying slight pressure. Never move it back and forth! Move the dental floss all the way down under the gum edge.

  5. How to remove dental floss again:

With easily passable contact points, remove the dental floss through the contact points again (otherwise, pul the thread sideways out of the interdental area).

  6. How to continue in the lower jaw:

To clean the lower jaw, stretch the dental floss over the tips of both your index fingers. Then carefully insert the dental floss and floss as previously in the upper jaw.

  7. How to use interdental brushes:

Insert the brush from the outside or the inside into the interdental areas and move it back and forth, applying slight pressure to the bristles.

Interdental brushes are also suitable for cleaning implants/fixed orthodontic appliances. Change the brush after 14 days at most. Your dental professional will be happy to advise you on the right brush size.

Water Flossers

Although known for being a little messy at first, adding water flossing to you daily routine can have tremendous long-term benefits on your oral health.

  1. To Clean Periodontal (Gum) Pockets- water flosser reaches down below the gums to clean moderate to severe gum pockets. If you’re someone who has struggled with periodontal disease in the past, this benefit is extremely worthwhile. Since traditional floss can only clean 2-3mm below the gum lines, people who have deeper periodontal pockets may never be able to fully clean their mouth. In turn, they’re more prone to relapse and chronic gum disease, including tooth loss. The stream of water from a water flosser can reach down into gum pockets as deep as 7mm or more, targeting bacterial colonies that would otherwise go undisturbed. Using a water flosser each day flushes away the loose dental bacteria before it calcify into tartar across the roots of the teeth. In turn, these cleaner environments are less likely to experience additional bone loss, pocketing, bleeding, or spread of disease.
  2. Hard-to-Reach Spaces Around Teeth- the thin tip of a water flosser is long enough that it can easily reach behind the teeth furthest back in your jaw.
  3. Underneath Fixed Dental Bridges- water flossing is safe and effective around all dental restorations, you can easily work it from one tooth to the next.
  4. They Work Around Braces Too- Water flossers—especially those that have brush-tip designs—work excellently around fixed brackets and orthodontic arch wires. Since plaque buildup around braces can leave lasting white spots on teeth, the investment in a water flosser can help target areas that a toothbrush might miss.
  5. They’re Easy to Use- When you’re using a water flosser, all you’ll need to do is trace around each tooth near the gumline, pausing between each one to clean those tight spaces. Once you get the routine down of water flossing without making much of a mess, the process is quite simple. Practically everyone in your family—at least junior high and up—can use a water flosser effectively. Many of them even have color-coded tips to that you can share the same device with your family members, changing out the attachment depending on who is using it. The more you practice using your water flosser, the easier it gets. Just be patient the first few times. The extra water and tickling sensations get easier to manage the more you use it, and you can use warm water if your teeth are sensitive. Most water flossers are waterproof and so can be used in the shower.
