A missing tooth (or multiple missing teeth) can certainly be embarrassing, and it can often impact your confidence. You want to be able to speak, smile, and laugh freely, and a dental bridge can help. A tooth bridge addresses the cosmetic and aesthetic issues with having a missing tooth, but it also aids in maintaining your oral health.
Whether you’re missing a tooth due to an injury, gum disease, decay, or genetics, we’re here to help you restore your oral health, your smile, and your confidence.
Missing teeth can happen easily, particularly as we advance in age and our teeth become weakened. You may wonder why it’s necessary to address a missing tooth at all, but the reality is that the longer you go without that tooth in place, the worse your teeth will get.
If left untreated, a missing tooth will cause all of the teeth in your mouth to shift and fill in the empty space. This can cause larger dental issues like:
The type of bridge you get will depend on the condition of your remaining teeth. A dental bridge needs to be fixed either to healthy teeth or to dental implants.
Maryland bridge: An adhesive or resin-bonded bridge, also called a Maryland bridge, doesn’t require dental crowns on the abutment teeth. Instead, it features wings on either side of the artificial tooth that attaches to your abutment teeth by an adhesive. The most common use for Maryland bridges is on the front teeth. These bridges require less preparation, but for the same reason, they may not be as secure as conventional bridges.
On the other hand, the less complex nature of an adhesive means a less invasive procedure.
Crowns will need to eventually be placed on teeth surrounding the gap, so some dentin and enamel will likely be removed on the existing teeth to make room for them.

The dentist will then prepare the teeth to accept the bridge.
Impressions or digital scans will then be taken of your prepared mouth and your bridge and crowns will be custom-made for your mouth. You may be given a temporary bridge until the permanent one is ready. This ensures your exposed teeth remain protected.
During a follow-up visit, crowns will be placed and the permanent bridge will be secured onto the crowns and adjusted to fit comfortably.
If you require a more extensive restoration than a crown or have more than one tooth that needs to be repaired, a good solution is a bridge.
Once you have a bridge fitted, you will have to take extra care during your daily hygiene regime to ensure it stays plaque free and does not cause bad breath.
